Lao Party Secretary General receives Portuguese communist leader

Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Secretary General, Mr Choummaly Sayasone, yesterday received the Secretary General of the Portuguese Communist Party, Mr Jeronimo de Sousa, who called on him at the Lao Party Central Committee Office in Vientiane.

During the meeting, Mr Choummaly expressed his appreciation for the visit of his Portuguese counterpart and delegation. He said the visit contributed to strengthening the traditional relations between the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and the Portuguese Communist Party. He also praised the success of the Nineteenth Congress of the Portuguese Party held in November which re-elected Mr de Sousa as the Party Secretary General. Mr Choummaly briefed Mr de Sousa on the current situation of the Lao Party and government, outstanding events held in the past year, and the goals of the country following the Resolution passed by the Ninth Party Congress.

Mr de Sousa and his delegation are visiting Laos from February 25 to March 1. Lao Politburo member, Party Secretariat member and Office Head of the Party Central Committee, Dr Bounpone Bouttanavong, represented the Lao Party Central Committee when he met for talks with Mr de Sousa and his delegation on Tuesday. Mr Choummaly said he highly valued the outcome of the meeting between the delegations of the two parties. He was confident that the cooperative relations and mutual support that exist between the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and the Portuguese Communist Party will continue to grow.

Secretary General de Sousa expressed his pride at having the opportunity to visit Laos and gain a better understanding of the courageous traditions involved in the long fight for national liberation, and the successes Laos has gained under the leadership of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.

He advised Mr Choummaly on current developments within the Portuguese Communist Party, thanked him for the warm welcome he had received, and wished Mr Choummaly great success in leading Laos on its chosen path.
