Theun-Hinboun hydropower extension project inaugurated

Last Friday witnessed the inauguration of the Nam Youang hydropower plant, which is the extension project of the Theun Hinboun Power Company. The power plant is located at Khounkham district, Khammouane province.

The Nam Youang hydropower plant has an installed generation capacity of 280-MW and is able to generate 1,750 gwh per year, according to Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr. Khammany Inthilath.

The Nam Youang project costs US$ 720 million as a joint venture between the Electricite du Laos (60%), the GMS Lao Company Limited (20%) and the Norwegian energy utility Stratkraft (20%).

It has been granted a 27 year concession by the government which is effective between 2013 and 2039, according to Mr. Khammany. The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad and relevant officials.
