Information Minister calls for eligible voters to exercise right

(KPL) Minister of Information and Culture Mounkeo Oraboun today calls for all Lao multi-ethnic people from all walks of life, particularly who are entitled to vote to be active in exercising their right on 30 April.

Mr Mounkeo who is also Head of the Election Advocacy Campaign and Awards Sub-committee says that the preparation for the election of the Seventh National Assembly has been systematically and continuously implemented.

‘There are 17 constituencies and 6,324 polling units. The total number of eligible voters is 3,267,210 people, with 1,643,099 female voters,’ he disclosed at a press conference in Vientiane Capital, on 29 April.

Mr Mounkeo who is also in charge of inspecting preparation in Vientiane Capital and Borikhamsay and Vientiane province continues that the total number of candidates running for the Seventh National Assembly is 190 people, including 46 female candidates and 132 will be elected as members of the National Assembly, the number of members of the Seventh National Assembly is by 17 people more than the number of the Sixth National Assembly which accounts for 115 members.

Amongst 190 candidates from local level including in the upcoming legislature, including 11 female members, there are four candidate representing the state-owned enterprise and five candidates including one female from the private enterprise.

The election is done, based on the article 54 of the Constitution of the Lao PDR’s Democratic Republic and relevant article of the law on the election of members of the National Assembly, the President of the Lao PDR has issued the presidential decree No. 295/PSD to determine Saturday of the 30 April, 2011 as the official day for the Seventh National Assembly Election and the presidential decree No. 296/PSD appointing members of National Election Committee who will be responsible for the Seventh National Election.

Mr Mounkeo added that Lao multi-ethnic people across the country are ready to exercise their right and fulfill their obligations for electing members of the Seventh National Assembly.

‘The result of the seventh national election will be then revealed one week later,’ he expected.
