(KPL) The Department of Statistics, Ministry of Planning and Investment, held a consultation workshop on supporting statistics activities for the 2010-2020 period on Dec13-14.
The National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) for the Lao PDR for the next decade (2010-2020) provides a framework for improving the national statistics system and activities required to implement the strategy, according to Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, Mr. Bounthavy Sisouphanthong.
‘Scarcities in human, logistical and financial resources, which are more pronounced in least developed countries like the Lao PDR, are present and prominent. Data shortage is considered a major constraint to policy making and progress monitoring in the Lao PDR,’ said Tomas Africa of the PARIS21 (Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century).
Mr. Tomas said that there were a range of reasons for the data constraints such as poor coordination between line ministries and agencies and between donors and development partners on data collection and analysis efforts.
He also said that the government lacked human resources and financial capacity to undertake data collection, analysis and reporting.
