ADB approves US$ 55 million for infrastructure development in northern Laos

(KPL) The Asian Development Bank has approved of financial grant for three projects aiming at boosting agricultural production in northern provinces through improving road network and strengthening dengue fever control and surveillance.

The agreement on the grant assistance was signed here on Wednesday by Minister of Finance Somdy Douangdy and ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda. Relevant officials of both sides witnessed the signing.

According to the agreement, US$23 million of the grant will go to the improvement of agricultural production infrastructure to enhance income generation for people in remote areas such as irrigation facilities and roads in Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Oudomsay and Phongsaly.

A sum of USD 20 million will be spent on the development of north economic corridor road between Thanh Hua of Vietnam and Houaphanh of Laos and the purchase of vehicles and vehicle load weighing software and the rest USD 12 million will be spent on expanding the dengue fever epidemic control system and the prevention of tropical communicable diseases between Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam such as SARS, avian flu and Swine Flu AH1N1.
